“Today, as I stand in Rome, it is crucial for me to emphasize the profound suffering experienced by both Palestinian and Israeli societies due to the prolonged absence of resolution in the 75-year conflict in the Holy Land.
The recent escalation of violence in the region can be traced back to incremental negative shifts over the past two decades, moving away from peaceful resolution. The anguish is palpable on both sides, but particularly acute in Gaza, where basic necessities such as food, clean water, and safe shelter are scarce. The people of Gaza have lost hope amidst the dehumanizing effects of relentless conflict.
At Caritas, we bear witness to the harrowing tales of suffering from the Gaza community, particularly women and children who yearn for peace. Despite resource constraints, our steadfast presence in Gaza City and the south allows us to alleviate some of this suffering through vital services such as food, water, cash assistance, and healthcare.
Similarly, distressing conditions persist in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where decades of hardship have eroded freedom, economic stability, and dignity. Caritas endeavours to mitigate these challenges through various means, including food coupons, economic support, and empowerment programs tailored to the most vulnerable, including the elderly and disabled.
In our unwavering commitment to peace, Caritas Jerusalem advocates for an end to violence and calls for the protection of communities in the Holy Land. Our mission is rooted in fostering forgiveness, reconciliation, and the pursuit of justice for all those affected. It is imperative that we work tirelessly towards promoting peace and harmony within both societies in the Holy Land.
I reiterate the need for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of borders for humanitarian aid. My sincere gratitude to our friends for their support. Caritas Jerusalem cannot put love into action without our friends putting fraternal cooperation into action.”
