On April 14, 2024, Caritas Jerusalem participated in the 75th anniversary celebration of the Pontifical Mission for Palestine. The event was marked by a special mass ceremony officiated by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, at the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center Church.
As the Chair of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA), Cardinal Dolan travelled to the Holy Land to commemorate this significant milestone. Cardinal Dolan insisted to be “with the people of the holy land” at this tarbulant time in the life of the community.
During the Cardinal’s visit an interfaith dialogue session was held at Abraham’s House. In this symbolic space, Christian and Muslim representatives came together to address the pressing issue of hate speech. The primary goal of the dialogue session was to promote understanding and collaboration between different religious groups.
During his trip, Cardinal Dolan discussed ways to promote human dignity, justice, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their background or faith. He emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation, and his interactions with the community underscored the human cost of conflict. These visits highlight the urgent need for dialogue and understanding to bring about peace.
Since Caritas Jerusalem is committed to serving vulnerable communities amid the Holy Land crisis, Secretary General Anton Asfar represented the organization during the 75th-anniversary celebration, highlighting Caritas Jerusalem’s dedication to humanitarian work and interfaith dialogue. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on their legacy and renew their commitment to promoting justice and aim for peace.
