Caritas Jerusalem Joint Partners Conference: The Heart of the Church’sMission for Hope and Healing

On December 11-12, 2024, Caritas Jerusalem hosted the Joint Partners Conference at the Casa Nova Guest House in Bethlehem, bringing together partners, dignitaries, and representatives from around the world to reflect on the organization's impactful work and plan for a future of resilience and compassion.

The conference was graced by the presence of His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, President of Caritas Jerusalem, alongside officials from the Palestinian government and international cooperation offices. Among the key agenda items were the launch of the 2025 Emergency Appeal, a strategic plan for 2025-2030, and a review of last year’s achievements.

The first day of the conference focused on outlining Caritas Jerusalem’s future direction and shared goals with partners and donors. Delegates were presented with updates on ongoing initiatives and invited to collaborate in shaping the organization’s path forward. The second day featured a field visit to Caritas projects in the Bethlehem Governorate, including Al Basma Center, Bethlehem University, and Cremisan Monastery. These visits allowed participants to meet beneficiaries and see firsthand the positive outcomes of Caritas Jerusalem’s work.

Mr. Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem, emphasized Bethlehem’s unique significance as the birthplace of the Prince of Peace. He highlighted that Caritas Jerusalem, part of the global Caritas network, is committed to supporting vulnerable communities, an effort strengthened by recent organizational restructuring and strategic renewal. Asfar also honored the memory of two Caritas staff members tragically lost in Gaza, remembering their sacrifices as a testament to the organization’s resilience and dedication.

The Cardinal’s speech stood out, reaffirming that Caritas is not just the arm of the Church but the Church itself, embodying its commitment to bringing hope, healing, and dignity to all. He shared his personal experience visiting Gaza, where the resilience of the Christian community in the face of adversity left a lasting impression. Caritas’ work in Gaza, from medical care to psychosocial support, was crucial for those in desperate need. He also expressed deep concern for the diminishing Christian presence in the Holy Land, particularly in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank. The hardships faced by families in these regions are pushing many to leave, threatening the very fabric of the Christian community in the region.

Yet, the Cardinal conveyed a strong message of hope. Rooted in the Advent season, he spoke of the anticipation of the coming of the King of Peace, which calls all Christians to remain steadfast in their mission of service, love, and solidarity.

As Caritas Jerusalem looks ahead to the strategic plan for 2025-2030, the conference reaffirmed the importance of strong partnerships and a unified commitment to supporting the most vulnerable communities. The second day’s field visits illustrated the tangible impact of Caritas' work and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration to tackle the challenges facing the region.

The conference concluded with a collective pledge to continue advocating for peace, justice, and dignity for all in the Holy Land. The Cardinal reminded the gathering of the responsibility to promote awareness and work toward a just resolution to the ongoing conflict. “Together, we can work toward a future where all people in this land live with dignity and in harmony,” he said, reinforcing the mission of Caritas Jerusalem to be a force for hope and healing.
