Caritas Jerusalem’s Polio Vaccination Effort in Gaza

In a remarkable display of dedication and resilience, Caritas Jerusalem has embarked on a crucial mission to facilitate polio vaccines to children in Gaza during a period of intense conflict. On September 1st, 2024, the organization made a significant contribution by setting up two health centres in Deir Al Balah in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health. This initiative underscores Caritas Jerusalem's commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations during adversity.

The polio vaccination campaign, which began on September 1st, is a four-day intervention aimed at protecting the health of Gazan children. Prior to the campaign, a Caritas Jerusalem nurse underwent specialized training to administer polio vaccinations, ensuring that the team was well-prepared for this vital task. On the first day alone, Caritas team successfully vaccinated 2,003 children from the surrounding area, marking a strong start to the campaign.

Caritas Jerusalem has deployed a total of 14 medical teams across the Gaza Strip. Of these teams, twelve are stationed in the southern regions of Gaza, while two are actively working in Gaza City. This strategic distribution is designed to maximize the reach of our primary health care services across the strip.

The vaccination efforts are concentrated on two key medical points: Abu Oureif and Al Birqeh in Deir Al Balah. These locations were selected due to their significant populations of internally displaced people, estimated at around 35,000 individuals. The focus of the campaign is on vaccinating children in these communities, where access to healthcare services is severely limited due to ongoing conflict.

Beyond the immediate goal of vaccination, Caritas Jerusalem is also calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. As Mr. Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem, stated, "Our work in Gaza is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of the community, even under the most difficult conditions.”

Caritas Jerusalem's dedication to both humanitarian aid and peace advocacy exemplifies a holistic approach to crisis intervention. The organization’s efforts reflect a deep commitment to not only addressing immediate health needs but also fostering a broader environment of stability and security.

In summary, Caritas Jerusalem's participation in the polio vaccination campaign represents a vital effort to safeguard the health of Gaza's most vulnerable residents. Through our collaboration with WHO and the Ministry of Health, and our unwavering advocacy for peace we are making a significant impact in the region.

End.
