Caritas Jerusalem’s Response in Rafah/ April 2024

More than 1.5 million people, most of whom were displaced from other areas of Gaza, are sheltering in Rafah. Currently, the population density in Rafah exceeds 23,000 per square kilometer. The situation in Gaza, particularly in the Rafah governorate, is truly dire and heartbreaking. The tens of thousands of people, 70% of whom are women and children, who have been killed and injured are a stark picture of the immense suffering by the Palestinian people in the region. It's devastating to hear about the loss of lives, the injuries, and the unbearable living conditions Palestinians survive.

Caritas Jerusalem's decision to resume work in Gaza is crucial, as humanitarian organizations provide assistance and support to those in need. However, the challenges are immense, given the extent of the destruction, the crumbling infrastructure, and the scarcity of resources.

The health system in Gaza has already collapsed due to the destruction of health facilities, unbalances, electricity blackouts, the killing of health providers, and the shortage of drugs and medical supplies.

Overcrowding, destruction of buildings, universities, schools, health facilities, infrastructure, flooding of sewage in the streets, solid waste, and scarcity of water cause the spread of infections such as hepatitis A, diarrheal diseases, respiratory infections, meningitis, chicken pox, skin infections, and a rise in mortalities.

All people in Gaza are food insecure, with forced starvation, and malnutrition hits most people, particularly children, which reduces immunity and exacerbates infections.

Regarding chronic diseases, many cancer patients, patients with renal failure, and patients with cardiovascular diseases passed away due to a lack of medicines and medical supplies.

A cease-fire and the urgent need for massive and consistent food assistance are imperative to prevent further loss of life and to alleviate the famine threat. Sustainable peace is the only way to ensure the safety and well-being of the people in Gaza and to address the underlying issues that have led to this humanitarian crisis.
