The social department started to operate when Caritas Jerusalem was established after the Six Day War in 1967. Since then, Caritas has gained extensive experience and developed a large network of people and institutions in order to reach individuals and families in need of emergency assistance.

Caritas Jerusalem is active in different areas of Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip including small villages and refugee camps. It identifies people in need and provides financial help for food and medical care as well as for school and university fees. Caritas also assists low-skilled workers to find temporary jobs.

Caritas Jerusalem social assistance facilities include a day center for elderly in Ramallah (Elderly Day Care Center)
